Keira Knightley ‘banned’ these beloved fairy tales for her 3-year-old daughter

Keira Knightley is curating a very specific library for her 3-year-old daughter Edie – and, no, Cinderella is not invited.

« I’m being very careful about fairy tales with my kid because I don’t like the message that a lot of them have, » the « Colette » star tells USA TODAY. « So ‘The Little Mermaid’ has been banned. ‘Cinderella’ has been banned. I haven’t looked at ‘Snow White’ again, but that may be banned, as well. »

But all her empowering parenting may be for naught. « Of course (my daughter) wants to be a princess, » the 33-year-old sighs. « And I’m like, ‘You don’t want to be a princess, you want to be a queen. Because queens are in charge!’ But the more I’m saying that to her, the more she’s saying, ‘I want to be a princess!' » Knightley laughs. « But I think it’s just because she knows it annoys me. Which is fair enough. »

Knightley next stars in Disney’s « The Nutcracker and the Four Realms, » in which she plays the whispery Sugar Plum Fairy.

Good news for the Mouse House: Disney’s more modern fairy tales pass muster.

Knightley’s on board with the themes of sisterhood in « Frozen, » and « Moana’s great because she’s strong. Moana’s my favorite so far, » she declares.
